_☏ Barishan, the problem discussed here, hungs on a brief, very brief, translation of the TDK lemma levent. If you ever have time -it is not urgent at all: as you can see, it is a 2011 question-, it would be helpful to understand the 2 definitions corresponding to the 2 etymologies from farsi and from italian. (Also there is levendane). In the meantime we are looking for the old script of the osmanli word levend (tr): ?[[Κατηγορία:Ελλείπουσα γραφή (οθωμανικά τουρκικά)]] (levend). ‑‑Sarri.greek  | 00:04, 11 Ιουλίου 2020 (UTC)[απάντηση]
Hi! I'll directly translate the definitions stated by the TDK:
The first etymology (from Farsi لوند),
1. (noun, history) a member of the class of soldiers assigned in the Ottoman navy and/or its coasts. (Our levents used to get out of the barracks on the coast one by one and dive into the sea - the example by Uçuk).
2. (adjective) tall (it isn't stated here, but I must add that it is obsolete as today literally nobody would use "levent" as "tall" in everyday speech) - It started with tall poplar trees that grow mightily, and come to an end with oaks, quinces, firs and pines respectively. (the example by Abasıyanık, probably about a street or garden)
3. (adjective, figuratively) tall and handsome (person)
The second etymology (from Italian levante)
1. a large, removable, spool-shaped cylinder made of wood or metal, used to wrap warp yarn or raw fabric on, and placed on weaving looms.
-âne is a Farsi suffix that denotes the meaning "in a ... manner"; so levendane (or alternatively "levendâne") means "in a handsome, coquettish, ostentatious and flamboyant way suiting to levents".
As a proper noun, Levent, has two different definitons with two different stresses with regards to the pronunciation: 1. A male given name (lɛ'vent) and 2. A district in Istanbul ('lɛvent)
The Ottoman Turkish spelling would be لوند (levend); with definitions 1. levent the soldier 2. μέθυσος 3. ζαμπαράς 4. παλικαράς, νταής

wow! Thank you ☏ Barishan you are so thorough! I didn't mean to burden you that much. Very helpuful. Yes, I have stayed at Levent some years ago. I shall edit again according to your translation. ‑‑Sarri.greek  | 08:27, 13 Ιουλίου 2020 (UTC)[απάντηση]
