This story needs to be validated as I only know it in its jumbled form - Apparently, in about 4BC, the Macedonians threatened to attack a Laconic (Sparta?) city; and if successful would raise it to the ground. The Spartans were not only hardy physically, but also very sparse with their words apparently, for they replied to the Macedonians with one single word "if"! - Source: TV program Countdown, 14-Apr-2008
